Orvis Tattersall Shirt- Bought from outlet store in Rehoboth Beach. Tattersall is to the UK as flannel is to the USA for outdoors wear. While you can find tattersall shirts pretty much anywhere, Orvis and Viyella are the gold standard for fall/winter colors. L.L. Bean, Brooks Brothers, and even Eddie Bauer are also acceptable. For spring/summer, Vineyard Vines offers the best variety of colors.
J. Crew Lambswool Crewneck Sweater- Bought from outlet in Rehoboth Beach. I must say I was impressed by J. Crew's attempt at the classic Shetland sweater. While not as heavy or expensive as J. Press's Shaggy Dog sweater, it comes in the same variety of colors and is pretty much identical.
Ralph Lauren Quilted Vest- Bought from Uptown Cheapskate several years ago. With its corduroy lapels, this vest is much more hunt/riding club than 1980s Prep or Finance Bro. I sized up twice in order to fit heavy sweaters under it, but it still fits perfectly with just a shirt. (I am a size M, while the vest is XL)
J. Crew Flex Fit Chinos- An upgrade from my straight fit Suttons. J. Crew's slim fit is definitely worth buying

Note: Mason is sporting a deviation of Southern Prep that is common on the Delmarva Peninsula. During the spring/summer, it consists of khaki shorts and a neutral polo or tee shirt. A flannel and jeans during winter/fall. Present at all times are a pair of Billfish Sperrys, and optional are a ball cap, fishing shades, and anything made by Under Armour.

While the party had an ugly sweater theme, I had to deliver a speech, which made me decide upon a classier combo. I feel Mr. Kennedy would approve.

Christmas Day
This Christmas was a tough one for my family, as it was the first one spent without my grandfather. However, it was also a joyful Christmas, as it was our first one spent with Hattie, our new Catahoula Leopard Hound. We were sure to bring her on our annual post-brunch hike at Pemberton Hall.
Having recently lost our 16 year old dog Jude, my family decided to adopt a younger dog from a local shelter in Cambridge, MD. It was there where we fell in love with Hattie (formerly Maggie) and took her home that day.

Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket- Bought new off eBay for much less than the retail price. Next semester, I will be studying abroad in a country of colder climate (not gonna say yet), so I needed an outer layer that would block the wind and keep the heat in. The Nano Puff can do both, and can be worn stylishly in town and country alike with a 1980s ski-prep vibe. *
Patagonia Better Sweater Vest- Bought from Vernon Powell Shoes, our local Patagonia and Vineyard Vines retailer. The opposite of its above mentioned quilted counterpart, this vest is much more finance bro than country gentleman. Favored by investment bankers and corporate analysts, it is now typically paired with an OCBD, slacks, and dressier shoes to form the so-called Midtown Uniform. However, it is still perfectly acceptable to wear it for its intended purpose of being in the outdoors.*
L.L. Bean Dress Gordon Scotch Flannel Shirt- Bought from L.L. Bean's website. For those looking for an inexpensive flannel that isn't used, see what L.L. Bean has to offer. While they are no longer made in the US, the shirts are still long lasting and come in a variety of Scottish tartans. I own another one in Blackwatch.
*Both of these items run slim, so if you plan on layering heavy sweaters underneath, size up.
Another Christmas tradition for my family is our annual trip to Williamsburg, VA. Located within close proximity of Jamestown and Yorktown, Williamsburg is a town rich with history of the colonial and revolutionary periods. Williamsburg is also home to The College of William & Mary, the second-oldest institution of higher learning in the country (number one being Harvard). A so-called "public ivy" and my father's alma mater, W&M was at the top of my list when applying to colleges, and I received my letter of acceptance on the glorious day of March 24th of this year. However, the impending costs of law school caused me to decide to remain in the state of Maryland for at least my first two years of college. This way, William & Mary's Marshall-Wythe School of Law may be less of a financial burden without the cost of a undergrad degree.

After a 5 hour (usually 3) car ride from Salisbury to Williamsburg, the first thing my family did after dinner was head to Merchants Square, a shopping area in between the college and the colonial district itself. Conceived by the Rockefellers in 1927, Merchants Square may be the oldest planned shopping district in the country. While there are many shops and restaurants within the square, I will take time to highlight only a few of them.
Scotland House, Ltd.
I hold Williamsburg in the same vein as two other towns: Easton, MD (see my last post), and Lexington, VA. Perhaps a reason for this is the fact that all three have (or in Easton's case, had) a Celtic shop. Scotland House is Williamsburg's Celtic emporium, with 90% of its stock imported from England, Scotland, and Ireland.
Scotland House carries a wide variety of family tartan scarves, hats, and ties (being a bargain at only $30). They also carry the flags of the UK and Ireland. While I was taking classes at William & Mary two summers ago, one of my friends decided to buy a Union Jack... on Independence Day!
It wouldn't be a Anglo/Celtic store without some fine waxed cotton jackets. While not from Barbour, the jackets are of equal (if not better) quality and equal price.
Tartan? Check! Waxed jackets? Check! What could make this store even better? Harris Tweed! And Scotland House carries plenty of it!
While they didn't carry our family's tartan, they did carry our crest on a mug.
Ocean Palm
Ocean Palm is a Lilly Pulitzer Signature Store, with a sister location in Virginia Beach. I have bought many gifts from here, but not many items for myself. Their men's department is confined to a single shelf, consisting of needlepoint goods from Smathers & Branson and ties, shirts, and hats from Collared Greens, a Southern Prep brand I have mentioned before that manufactures exclusively in the US. However, this time, I received a pleasant surprise with the new addition of Lilly Pulitzer menswear. For a while, Lilly had stopped manufacturing menswear, turning its already sold apparel into collectors items that sell for hefty sums on eBay. I own a single blue polo shirt from Lilly which I found at Uptown Cheapskate for only $10. It is a medium, but runs much larger than that (buyers beware). While my shirt is in a subtle light blue, the rest of Lilly's menswear is very loud, even for GTH. Please tread lightly when buying and wearing.
The Ocean Palm is carrying a selection of Lilly ties and a single pair of shorts until the next collection is released in the spring. While I love the patterns of the ties, they sadly happen to be made in China (and sell for $78).
Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop
By far one of the most famous stores in Merchants Square is the Wythe Candy Shop. Its gourmet sweets are made in front of customers and placed in the store's enormous display counter. It also sells basic prepackaged candies and specialty sodas of the area.
The store is named after the same family of the Marshall-Wythe Law School of William & Mary.
The Trellis
One of the nicest restaurants in Williamsburg is The Trellis in Merchants Square. Owned by the same family as several other downtown restaurants, it specializes in upscale American fare for a price comparable to the taverns of the colonial district. I usually order the steamed mussels, which is an appetizer large enough to make a meal. Both times I have eaten here were on the Fourth of July, and with friends from my William & Mary classes.

R.W. Bryant Ltd.
The Trad store of Williamsburg. Owned and operated by Rusty Bryant since 1986, the store specializes in Trad style, while still carrying contemporary Preppy staples to cater towards the college population. With Gitman Brothers for the lawyer, and Southern Tide for the pre-law student, this store has lasted and will continue to last as long as Williamsburg stays the Williamsburg we know. But as Mr. Bryant told me, it's one of the few stores of its kind left.
Having one of the largest blazer and sport coat collections I have ever seen, R.W. Bryant offers a wide range in price and quality. Spanning from Afazzy to Southwick Clothiers, a customer is nearly always likely to find what he is looking for.
R.W. Bryant is also a Barbour retailer, offering the signature waxed jackets and other merchandise such as shirts and slippers. They also carried the wax I sought on my trip to Easton, but the salesman recommended sending the coat back to the company itself for its rewaxing rather than buying a can. These days, it's rare that a store will put a customer before profit like this, and I am happy to say R.W. Bryant will have me as a customer for years and years to come because of it.
In addition to offering the finest menswear in Williamsburg, R.W. Bryant also offers a humidor full of *quality made cigars.
Honorable Mentions
While I did not get to visit or mention them during this trip to Williamsburg, here are several other stores and restaurants in and near Merchants Square I felt were worth giving a shout out to.
Blue Talon Bistro- Fine French dining featuring escargot. A favorite spot of mine for breakfast and lunch.
The Cheese Shop- The name says it all. Also a popular sandwich shop for lunch. Don't forget to try the house dressing! Outdoor seating all year round due to limited indoor space.
The Craft House- Sells Christmas decorations, jewelry, pewter, etc. Need something for your wife/mother/grandmother/sister/aunt/girlfriend? Get it here.
Aroma's Cafe- Coffee shop specializing in light breakfast fare. Packed on the weekends.
Dog Street Pub- Bar setting with fun pub food. Optional outdoor seating for warm days.
Berret's Seafood- Oyster bar and upscale dining. Outside corn hole games popular during summertime.

Colonial Williamsburg
My family and I spent the majority of our trip in the town's colonial district. Stretching from Merchant's Square to the colonial capitol building, Duke of Gloucester Street is closed off to cars, and offers an array of trade shops, taverns, and other historical sites for visitors. Some are accessible only with certain passes, which my family does not bother with purchasing. All of what we have come to love is available to the public.
Bruton Parish Church. Active since at least 1715, it is a famous landmark in Williamsburg's colonial district. I have artwork featuring the church in my room back in Salisbury.
The Governor's Palace. The building is accessible with passes purchased from the Colonial Williamsburg foundation itself. It features a large maze out back. During Christmastime, each window is adorned with a wreath.
The end of Duke of Gloucester Street is marked by the colonial capitol building. It housed the Virginia House of Burgesses and later House of Delegates until 1779 when the capital was moved to Richmond.
The colonial district also offers several historic taverns as dining options, a bake shop, outdoor markets, and several retail stores. While I didn't get pictures of them, I recommend them to anyone who decides to visit this wonderful town!

The College of William & Mary
Located across the road from Merchants Square, the W&M bookstore is technically located in the colonial district of Williamsburg. It doubles as a fully stocked Barnes and Noble as well, and has a Starbucks cafe on its second level (Warning: Does not accept Starbucks gift cards, but does accept B&N ones). Book signings are frequent, as well are sightings of my former classmates from past summer classes. Two winters ago, I by chance ran into my friend Christian from Houston, currently a freshman at Columbia. This year, I was blessed with seeing my friend Campbell, now a sophomore at W&M, as well as my former professor Dr. Jim Whittenburg, also a professor of my father's.
A sea of green and gold apparel, the W&M bookstore offers a wide variety of college gear for a 20% discount to those with a W&M ID. Salisbury University's bookstore really needs to step up its game. Want even cheaper W&M gear? Go to the Campus Shop on Prince George Street.
Before a time of hoodies, there was this OG. The college sweater. An Ivy style hallmark, W&M comes in three forms: v-neck, crew neck, and cardigan. All three send an Animal House vibe. Very expensive though, and imported.
Across Richmond Road from Merchants square is William & Mary's "Ancient Campus".
A side view of the Wren Building, W&M's signature structure (UVA : Rotunda :: W&M : Wren Building). It is the oldest academic building in the U.S. still in use. My father defended his dissertation in this building.

Hello readers! Due to final papers and exams, I have not had the time to compose a post for my second New York City trip. While that post will be coming soon, I have taken the time to put together this cumulative post from the events of this current and last weekend. Enjoy!

Snowbound Vol. II
Salisbury typically gets its first major snow of winter in January or February. When I heard we would be in for snow two Fridays ago, I shrugged the forecast off and went about with my usual business. Salisbury's location on the Delmarva peninsula usually causes any snow to turn into rain once it comes our way. Little did I know of what was in store for my little town.
Aside from our Christmas lights, my house was completely obscured by the snow. We got a solid 8 inches!
The snow started around 2:00 pm, and began to stick after three hours, turning the roads into a nightmare. It snowed the following day as well, but not nearly as hard as Friday night. However, this didn't stop my house from losing power around 9 Saturday evening. The next day, most of the roads had been cleared, so I decided to venture out into the countryside.
A hidden creek in the woods on the outskirts of Salisbury. An equestrian dirt road once ran beside it, but it has now been forgotten.
The woods were also once frequented by Salisbury's defunct fox hunt club. My father, who grew up near these woods, remembers the foxhounds occasionally ending up on his property.

L.L. Bean Blackwatch Flannel- Passed over from grandfather. Woolrich, Pendleton, and L.L. Bean reign supreme when it comes to where one should buy their flannel shirts. I currently own three flannel shirts including the one in the picture, one from Sears, and a brighter colored one from Vineyard Vines. My one from L.L. Bean by far trumps the other two. Bean offers a wide selection of certified tartan patterns, with my shirt being in blackwatch.
St. John's Bay Cotton Crewneck Sweater- Passed over from grandfather. Due to its wear and large size, I have reserved this sweater for weekends or days at home. St. John's Bay is essentially J.C. Penney's attempt at coastal New England style. While I tend to steer away from most department store brands, I do not condemn St. John's Bay to where Alfani sits. It has been around since the 80's, and sweaters I own from them give a vibe similar to vintage L.L. Bean (but sadly aren't made in the USA). However, I would never seek one out. As with Stafford and Club Room, take it or leave it.

Easton, MD
My family has the tradition of taking yearly day trip to the small town of Easton, MD around Christmastime. While we typically go closer to Thanksgiving, my schedule made us push our trip forward by several weeks. Easton is pretty much summarized by this excerpt from a 1984 Time Magazine article on the town's annual Waterfowl Festival:
“Catalog freaks would recognize Easton as an L.L. Bean kind of town. On second thought, that may be a little narrow. It is a Bean-Gokeys-Orvis-Eddie Bauer-Lands End kind of town; it spreads its trade around. Topsiders, penny loafers, khaki pants, monogrammed sweaters, oxford cloth shirts, lamb suede jackets and the ever present tweed, to say nothing of argyle socks, contribute heavily to the Easton uniform. Easton was preppie when preppie wasn’t cool. Ducks embellish its mailboxes; there are ducks on its welcome mats. It is a place of fine old houses hugging tidy streets. Well-fed cats walk its alleys with the air of taxpayers; they do not prowl.”
On the way to Easton, we drove through a small community known as Trappe. My late grandfather lived here for a time. I mentioned this area in my post on Oxford, MD as being home for a country gentleman, and I will hold to this statement.
A patrician duck hunter's paradise, Talbot County has also attracted the attention of notable Washingtonians, including Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, both of whom have vacation homes in the nautical town of Saint Michaels. Ever wonder where Wedding Crashers was filmed/took place? Saint Michaels and Talbot County.
Prime land for a country estate.
Our scenic route through Trappe led us directly into Easton. As it lies on US Route 50 many pass through a part of Easton on their way to Ocean City, MD. However, the few who venture in further are treated to one of the nicest (and also richest) small towns in Maryland.
One of Easton's most famous landmarks is the Tidewater Inn, a hotel and restaurant that has hosted Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, Bing Crosby, JFK, and Robert Mitchum (another Trappe resident).
Easton has been host to a number of men's stores over the years. One of my favorites was a Celtic store that sold tartan ties from Scotland. Sadly, the store closed a few years ago, and has had its storefront replaced by Sailor, a boutique transplanted from Saint Michaels specializing in contemporary preppy brands such as Vineyard Vines, Patagonia, Southern Marsh, etc. While I usually make an effort to visit Sailor, today I decided to let another store be the focus of my visit: Berrier Ltd. Berrier is the family namesake of the father and son who own the store, and specializes in a clothing one may find on an English country gentleman.
Berrier offers a large selection of tweed jackets and vests. It is also a retailer of Dubarry, a renowned Irish brand famous for its boots and waxed jackets.
Berrier's offers the classics of men's fragrances, including Royall Bayrhum, and a touch of the region, Chesapeake Bay Spyce.
After leaving Berrier's, I headed to Trumpeter Swan antiques, one of Easton's many antique emporiums.
Trumpeter Swan antiques is owned and managed by a man named Keith Davidson, who shares my affinity for herringbone sport coats and OCBDs. After getting into a conversation about his Dubarry waxed jacket during my visit last year, Mr. Davidson offered me a job helping post merchandise to eBay. While I wish I could have taken the job, my fuel expenses would have skyrocketed due to the hour long commute.
Mr. Davidson also specializes in the sale of decoys, one of the town's claims to fame due to the Waterfowl Festival.
I next headed across the street to Hill's Drugstore. This pharmacy is not your typical CVS or Walgreen's, as it still has the soda counter and diner of yesteryear's drugstores .
The past survives at Hill's Drugstore on Dover Street. Aside from being internally remodeled in 2007, little else has changed about the nearly 90 year old pharmacy and soda fountain.
You know you're in a Trad/Preppy/Ivy drugstore when the only reading glasses they sell are P3 style.

L.L. Bean Tattersall OCBD- Borrowed from my father. Visibly fraying at the collar and cuffs but still doing its job, this shirt is straight out of the L.L. Bean heyday, and is made in the USA.
Bass Cableknit Crewneck- I can't recall from where I bought this sweater, as I have owned it for years. Wool sweaters are my go-to for sub-50 degree days, and this particular sweater provides extra warmth due to being a size larger than most of my sweaters. Due to this size issue, I rarely wear it without a jacket on top.
After leaving the drug store, I headed to Albright's Gun Shop which was right next door. Not to buy a gun, but to look for wax dressing for my Barbour jacket. The store is probably the closest Barbour retailer to Salisbury. While they were fully stocked with jackets, vests, and shirts, Albright's unfortunately was not carrying any dressing at that moment.
In addition to carrying Barbour , Albright's is also an Orvis retailer. Easton's duck hunting culture really couldn't be farther from the rednecks of Duck Dynasty.
After my failed search for the Barbour dressing, I decided to go to a place I hadn't visited at all over the years I had been coming to Easton, and that was the *Easton Cigar and Smoke Shop. Years ago Salisbury once had a similar place called Watson's Smoke House. My grandfather remembers it as being a popular store to prank call when he was a boy due to it carrying Prince Albert (a tobacco) in a can ("don't you think you ought to let him out?"). In current times, our town would not be able to support such an establishment today (#VapeNation). However, Easton is the perfect location for those Orvis clad gentlemen to purchase and smoke their Montecristos in the shop's lounge.
Tucked aside from the main hustle of Washington and Dover Streets, Easton Cigar and Smoke Shop sits in one of Easton's historic neighborhoods in a building far different from the smoke shop I visited in North Carolina.
The smoke shop also offers a wide selection of pipes, and not the pot smoking kind.
In addition to traditional tobacco blends, ECSS also offers several inhouse blends named after rivers in Talbot County. They include Tred Avon, Choptank, and Miles.
After my visit to the smoke shop, I rejoined my family and returned home to Salisbury! Merry Christmas Easton! I'll see you next year!!!

With classes finished, there was one thing left for me to do before graduating, and that was the National Academic Championship. Our team consisted of the same players as it did for the TV show It's Academic (see my earlier posts), with three additional players to fill a fourth spot. The competition was held at the Mark Center Hilton in Alexandria, VA, by Chip Beall, a former game show host. While most of the other teams competing faced a long flight or car trip, our trip to Alexandria was less than three hours. As we were staying at the hotel where the competition was taking place, this put us in walking distance of a Chesapeake Bay tradition: Clyde's restaurant.
Originally a bar in Georgetown opened in '63, Clyde's has since expanded to a chain of upscale restaurants in the DC area (and even gets a shoutout in The Official Preppy Handbook).
The room our team was sat in was themed as a Chesapeake Bay hunt club (notice the guns and decoys). The restaurant also has an Adirondack themed dining room, as well as a nautical one which is home to the famous bar.
When you order a lobster roll and are given two of them with your order, you know you've paid your money's worth.
Dessert: Bailey's Cheesecake with Kahlua sauce.

Leatherman Ltd Nautical Flag Belt- Bought from the boutique/men's store Sailor in Easton, MD. Motif belts are tricky to pair with Nantucket Reds. However, the navy in the belt ribbon was able to bring both the belt and the pants together in a tasteful combination. After all, these pants were originally worn by sailors. Can be paired with khaki or stone chinos as well. Made in USA.
Genuine Nantucket Reds- Bought from Orvis outlet in Rehoboth, DE for only $35. These typically go for over $80, so I was quick to snatch these up in Delaware rather than driving up to Nantucket or getting hit hard with shipping fees and high prices. While obtaining genuine Nantucket Reds is a struggle even on Ebay, I recommend buying similar colored pants from other companies (like I did with Banana Republic before getting these) before getting lucky like myself or blowing nearly $100 on pants that are also imported. Murray's does offer US made Nantuckets online and in their flagship store, but they are sold at a much higher price.
Cole Haan Horsebit Loafers- See Winter 2017.
Nick decided upon a Vanderbilt University frocket tee, whale shorts, and deck shoes for the occasion. While he purchased the shirt during his visit to his chosen school, the whale shorts were found at Uptown Cheapskate during a post-birthday shopping spree that happened to correspond with a Memorial Day sale. Nick walked out of the store with over $1000 worth of clothes while having spent less than $100.
The following day, our team competed in the tournament but sadly did not make it to the playoffs. However, this did not bother us, as we would have had to return to Alexandria after graduating the next day, and played with minimal sleep on Sunday. So Nick and I decided to make the most of our opportunity and visit Alexandria's Old Town historic district as we had done during the competition last year. While walking around the waterfront, we both made a point to visit a preppy favorite in Alexandria, The Lucky Knot.
The Lucky Knot's Kings Street location in Alexandria. Its other location is in Annapolis, MD, which I sadly have not had the chance to visit yet.
The Lucky Knot specializes in mainly college preppy brands (Southern Tide, Vineyard Vines, Southern Proper, Etc.) that are popular in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, but also pays homage to New England through its sale of Barbour waxed jackets and Kiel James Patrick bracelets.
You know its a gentleman's store when these boys are on the wall.
After purchasing matching croakies from the store (and a bow-tie on Nick's part), the two of us hit the harbor before getting dinner and leaving the city at 9. We are already planning a return trip for this summer, so stay tuned for Alexandria, VA part II!

Its March 19th, and spring is tomorrow. Well, it will still feel like winter for the next few weeks in Salisbury, but that's no surprise. L.L. Bean Vintage Chamois Shirt- Passed off from grandfather. These cotton flannel shirts can be worn in a variety of ways, including as a jacket over an OCBD. As my grandfather has always been (and continues to be) an avid L.L. Bean customer, I was fortunate enough to be passed a vintage one. They were domestically made until the 1990s, and today Bean's chamois shirts are made elsewhere. If you wish to pursue the original US made shirts, I recommend Ebay, where you can find them for less than $30.
I completed the look with my Barbour Bedale, Bean Boots, and Ray Ban Aviators. In the final product, I looked more like a New England outdoorsman than a Maryland one.
Church Service (1/15)
Church is a time and place for a Trad to put his best foot forward. As I had missed church last week due to a blizzard (see Snowbound), I made use of the opportunity to dress well.

Vintage Palm Beach Wool Blazer- Passed off from father. A winter counterpart to my other navy blazer. In the case that you are building your own Trad wardrobe, I recommend first buying a navy blazer that can be worn year round, and then work your way up to a wool one. Palm Beach is a brand of unsung quality. While now catering to department stores such as Belk, the manufacture of their products has been globalized. However, they once were made domestically and are treasured by Trads like myself who take quality over brand names any day. This jacket was made specially for Phillips Men's Shop, a local menswear store that has long since been closed, which makes it even more endearing. Made in USA.
Stafford Oxford Cloth Button Down- Inherited from family friend. These shirts stand the test of time, and are not overly baggy or tight on the wearer. If one looks hard enough at used clothing stores and websites, one may even find a Stafford shirt that is made in the USA (which I too, have found).
J. Crew Repp Tie- Bought for $3 at a thrift store. From prep school students to U.S. presidents, the repp stripe tie will always have a place in the sartorial world. I came across this one as a last minute addition to my JFK costume for a Halloween party I was hosting. While I couldn't find the authentic to the era Brooks Brothers tie, I settled for this one of better quality but by the younger brand of J. Crew. While J. Crew outlets mostly import their ties from elsewhere, I am guessing the one I came across is either vintage or sold at their flagship stores. Made in Italy
Ray Ban Clubmaster Sunglasses- Bought at Uptown Cheapskate for $30. As a pair goes for $150 online or at retailers, I scored big on these used Ray Bans. As I had sold a Burberry blazer to Uptown as I was making my visit, I was able to use the in-store credit I gained from the sale to buy the glasses for much less than the price Uptown was selling them for. While I still am on the hunt for a pair of wayfarers, the clubmasters serve me well when paired with the right outfit. Best worn with blazers, not with Barbours. Made in Italy. *Warning: Do not wear the sunglasses as I am wearing them in the picture. This is only for blog purposes. Sunglasses are properly stored in the inner breast pockets of the jacket, or the breast pocket of the shirt.
Lands End Chinos- Finally took these to my tailor and had them cuffed. In the case of cuffs, always 1.25 inches. No more, no less. For more, see Ringing in the New Year.
Bass Weejun Penny Loafers- Bought at outlet store in Rehoboth Beach, DE. A staple with Preppies and Trads alike, these are considered by many to be the signature penny loafer. Only hardcore Trads dare put pennies in the slots. When the soles of the shoe gets worn out, Bass (like Barbour and L.L. Bean) will repair the shoes if you send them to their headquarters. Can be worn with socks in chillier weather, but to be worn barefoot at all times during the summer. Can be paired with pants and shorts alike. While the best deals for these shoes are found at outlet malls (especially in Rehoboth due to the lack of sales tax), Bass also offers Weejuns that are made in the USA on their website. However, they are of a much greater price.
J. Crew Anchor Socks- Bought at Michigan Avenue store in Chicago. These socks are best paired with loafers or oxfords. I have gotten many compliments on these socks from fellow students, as the anchor is the official logo of our school.
Also seen in the picture are a white pocket square and tie clip. Pocket squares are relatively inexpensive and can typically be purchased in the men's section of department stores. White is guaranteed to go with just about any other color, but other pocket square colors can be coordinated with the shirt or tie color as well. For premium made pocket squares, check out Arnold Steiner, a fellow Trad whose brand specializes in U.S. made clothing. Tie clips are also relatively inexpensive, and can be bought at J. Crew outlet stores for little cost. The one I am wearing was given to me years ago by my grandfather, and is made by Hickok USA, a domestic manufacturer that can be found on Ebay and Etsy alike.
An Unseasonably Warm Day (1/12)
Four days ago, it was 23 degrees with snow on the ground. Now, its 62 and sunny! Typical Delmarva weather. No jacket or sweater needed.

J. Crew Woven Leather Belt- See Ringing in the New Year. This belt seems to have a vendetta against these pants. Its end continues to fall out of the loop. I managed to temporarily solve the problem with tape, but am still looking for other solutions.
Polo Ralph Lauren Crested GTH Khakis- Bought at an outlet store in Nags Head, NC for the grand total of.... wait for it..... $15!!! As of October (or even earlier), Polo no longer sells them online or at their stores, and can now only be found on Ebay for $50+. These are probably the slimmest pair of pants in my wardrobe, and their high break makes them ideal for sock-less wear with loafers in the summer. Their khaki color and neutrally colored embroidery make them easy to wear with nearly any combination, and can also be paired with a navy blazer. One of the few examples of subtle GTH style.
J. Crew Double Diamond Socks- Bought at an outlet store in Queenstown, MD. I pair these typically with loafers, but have also done so with Bean Boots.
Cole Haan Horsebit Loafers- Bought from outlet store in Rehoboth Beach, DE. While I could have gotten a much better deal from the website (the salesman refused to price match, but there was still a store sale), I am actually glad to have bought these shoes in store, as their shoe sizes run larger than other brands. They are identical to their Gucci counterparts (which I hope one day to be able to afford), and I have had many people mistake them for that brand. While my pair is imported from elsewhere, Haan also puts out an Italian made version that can be purchased for a somewhat reasonable price on Ebay. Can be worn sock-less and with shorts during warmer months.
Brooks Brothers Blazer iPhone Case- Bought at outlet store in Queenstown, MD. Yet another compliment magnet. I alternate it with another Brooks case with foxhounds on the basis of occasion. Both have done me justice in protecting my phone from drops (while my old Otterbox cracked after its first plunge), and serve as a stylish alternative to clunky protective cases. The only drawback to Brooks Brothers phone cases are that you must remove them to charge your iPhone if you have a 3rd party charge cable (which I do), causing the paint to peel.

J. Crew 3-Button Corduroy Blazer- I have owned this jacket for many years now, and cannot recall from where I got it. Serves as a warm winter and fall coat due to its flannel lining designed for warmth. With its three buttons and elbow patches, one can fancy themselves as a country gentleman when wearing this. In the case of its buttons, one must follow the "sometimes-always-never" rule (being to sometimes button the top, always the middle, but never the bottom button) or button none at all like I did for a much more casual look. For an even more casual look, pair with a slim pair of blue jeans and oxford shoes or chukka boots. Dustin Hoffman knows.
Brooks Brothers V-neck Merino Wool Sweater- Bought from Uptown Cheapskate for $15 in contrast to its high prices online and in stores. This sweater is probably the best fitting out of my entire collection, which is bizarre considering it is a Brooks Brothers large (while I usually take small or medium from them).
L.L. Bean 8" Bean Boots- See Christmas 2016. All three of us received our pairs as Christmas gifts. As Morgan and I had ours ordered in September, we has use of our boots on Christmas day. However, it was Nick who fell victim to the Christmastime Bean Boot shortage, and didn't have his until the first Friday of January, which thankfully happened to be the day before the blizzard. Timing has never been better!
As you know from my earlier post, Nick is a student of mine in the area of Trad. In addition to the Bean Boots, he is wearing his Patagonia down jacket and a J. Crew nautical sweater (which he purchased from Uptown Cheapskate).

Vineyard Vines V-Neck Cotton Sweater- Bought from outlet store in Rehoboth, DE. The VV whale can be seen on at least five t-shirts at any given high school or college in the East (while not exclusive to that region). The sweaters tend to be more of a rarity, as they are much higher in price. However, you can find them for a bargain at outlet stores. While cashmere and lambswool are preferred, the perk of a cotton sweater is the fact that you can have it machine washed rather than dry cleaned or hand-washed.
Ralph Lauren University Stripe Oxford Cloth Button Down- Bought from outlet store in Nags Head, NC. Can be worn in all four seasons casually and for more formal occasions. Paired well with green.
Vineyard Vines Stone Chinos- Bought from Rehoboth outlet. VV outlets also provide a good deal on their pants. Be wary of stone, however. It stains easily.
Ralph Lauren Argyle Socks- Bought from my local Marshall's. This outlet chain offers good deals on RL socks (compared to nearly $20 from Macy's). These also happen to be made in Korea, which is a step up from other countries of East Asian manufacturing.
Rumours Quartz Watch- Passed off from father. Rumours is a relatively unknown brand, as it was exclusively sold by J.C. Penny. However, their watches feature Japanese and American movement, which is a bonus in my book. Mine happens to have been made domestically! My only complaint about the watch is its elastic metal band, which is too loose and has the potential to pinch the skin. Those looking for a Rumours watch may find one on Ebay or Etsy, but are not guaranteed to find a US made one.

Vineyard Vines University Stripe Oxford Cloth Button Down- Bought at Rehoboth. A universal shirt. Can be worn untucked with shorts or with a navy blazer and tie. It is also one of the few VV shirts I own to be oxford cloth.
J. Crew Leather Belt- Bought at Rehoboth outlets. A huge improvement to its woven counterpart. It fits perfectly within the loops and can be worn with virtually all color of pants (save black). Made in USA.
Nick decided to go nearly full out J. Crew in his outfit, save only his tie (Tommy Hilfiger), shoes (Nunn Bush tassel loafers), and MY Rayban sunglasses.

After coming in second place at a local academic invitational, I made the move of asking my significant other to prom. My outfit thankfully was appropriate for both occasions.

Vintage Harris Tweed Herringbone Blazer- Inherited from family friend. A staple with the Ivy League and English gentleman looks, every Trad should own a tweed blazer for the Autumn and Winter months. Like corduroy, it can be worn casually with jeans or more formally with chinos. Here however, I decided to experiment with GTH corduroys. Made in USA. *When buying tweed, be wary of moths having an appetite for it. My jacket has fallen victim to them, and has tiny holes on its sleeves. To prevent this from happening, be sure to store your tweed jacket with moth balls when stored away.
Polo Ralph Lauren Embroidered GTH Corduroy Pants- This choice gained me a questioning look from my father, but countless compliments from others (most notably Morgan). The GTH look couldn't be summed up any better than that! With these pants and the rest of my outfit, I could have passed as an observer from Yale at the competition instead of a contestant. Alden Cape Cod Collection Penny Loafers- With G.H. Bass, creator of the Weejun, now importing the majority of its shoes, as well as countless other companies following suit, Alden is one of the few remaining makers to keep all of its production domestic. With its factory in Middleborough, MA, Alden continues to be family owned and caters toward what fellow blogger College Trad refers to as GMPs (or God Mode Preps). According to Tony (CT), a GMP is rare outside of the upper crust, and transcends all other levels of Prep through a wardrobe including Alden loafers, Barbour Waxed Jackets, and a J. Press Shaggy Dog Sweaters. It is a holy trinity, so to speak, that I have not reached yet due to my lack of the sweater, but I am in no hurry. Being a Trad should never be rushed and should always be accommodating of your budget and things of greater importance. These loafers can be worn or without socks, and should be kept shined. For the sake of your budget, I recommend buying used on Ebay. Also, Alden itself does not sell shoes on its own website, and relies instead upon brick and mortar establishments (typically quite literally) for the majority of its sales. If that doesn't spell Trad, I don't know what does. Made in USA.
St. Patrick's Day
For class, I chose the Handbook pairing of a pink OCBD and green camel hair blazer. However, I decided to tone things more casual for the evening's St. Patrick's Day party and movie with Morgan, but still kept to the color scheme of pink and green.

Brooks Brothers Merino Quarter-Zip Sweater- Bought from Rehoboth outlet. This sweater was marked down 80% from its original price, and cost only $25, which is next to nothing when shopping at Brooks. As I did with my green jacket, I paired it with a pink OCBD. For chillier days, pair with a down vest and Bean Boots.
Fossil Grant Chronograph- When I wear a quarter zip, this is my go to watch. As the sweater itself is more casual, so is the watch, and it presents a more relaxed and younger look compared to my other dressier time pieces. For more, see It's Academic.
